Over the past 50 years the Rolex Daytona has solidified it’s place in history as one of the most sought after and popular chronographs in existence. The iconic style of the Daytona has been imitated by various brands for decades, but none compare to the original.
Rolex released the Daytona in 1963, inspired by auto racing and named for the world famous speedway in Daytona, Florida, home to the Daytona 500. The recognizable design of this chronograph features three sub-dials, a screw-down crown at 3 o’clock and two push pins above and below the crown at 2 and 4 o’clock.
This particular Daytona is exceptional for a number of reasons. First is that this 6241 is a very rare model, many collectors are more familiar with the 6239, 6263 or 6265. Another reason this watch is special is beautiful dial which is considered a "Paul Newman" dial. The Daytona gained notoriety after actor Paul Newman began wearing a 1972 Daytona his wife gave him after he took up auto racing. Because of his affinity for his particular Daytona, this version was named for him. The key characteristic being the font used in the three subdials; a more stylized serif font with open sixes and nines. The dials have become incredibly rare and sought after over the years, some selling for over a million dollars at auction.
Another feature of this watch that makes it so special is it's history; this is a one owner watch. It was originally purchased by a gentleman from the midwestern United States who used the watch while flying a plane to scout for restaurant chain locations. The watch not only comes with it's original box, outer box and Rolex papers, but also includes his receipt and carbon copy of his credit card slip, showing that he purchased the watch in 1973 for $543.38.
The final aspect of the watch that makes it so exceptional is condition. This watch is in superb condition. It is not only a one owner watch, but that owner only wore the watch on special occasions, so there is minimal wear and the watch has not been polished. The dial is in fantastic condition, with only one very small blemish between the left subdial and the Rolex logo. The watch is also on it's original bracelet with the original clasp.
This is truly an incredible opportunity to purchase a rare, complete Rolex Paul Newman Daytona, ref. 6241 in fantastic condition with a wonderful history. Please contact us with any questions at Max@thekeystone.com. On Hold.
