The Vacheron Constantin Ref. 6440, often referred to by collectors as the Cioccolatone for its softly curved square case, represents one of the most distinctive post-war designs produced by the manufacture. Introduced during the mid-20th century, the reference captures a moment when Vacheron Constantin embraced sculptural form as much as mechanical refinement balancing broad, architectural surfaces with restrained dial design in a way that feels unmistakably elegant even today. Housed in yellow gold, the present example retains the warm proportions and understated sophistication that have made the reference increasingly appreciated among collectors of important shaped watches.

Beyond the watch itself, this particular example carries a remarkable layer of Japanese sporting history. The caseback is engraved: Celebrating Promotion to Ozeki, Wajima Hiroshi, 1972.9.27, Kaneda Masaichi. The inscription commemorates the promotion of Wajima Hiroshi to the rank of ozeki the second-highest rank in professional sumo, reserved only for wrestlers who have demonstrated sustained excellence at the sports highest level. Wajima would ascend even further the following year, becoming the 54th yokozuna and one of the defining sumo figures of the 1970s.

The presentation was made by Kaneda Masaichi, among the most celebrated figures in Japanese baseball history and widely regarded as one of the greatest pitchers ever to play the game. The connection between the two athletes reflects a fascinating intersection of Japans two most revered sporting traditions during a transformative period in postwar Japanese culture. More than a commemorative object, the watch stands as a tangible artifact linking two national icons at the height of their public prominence.

The watch itself remains beautifully preserved, featuring a silver brushed dial with applied baton indexes, dauphine hands, and a date aperture at three oclock. The gently curved yellow gold case displays the characteristic flowing lines associated with the Cioccolatone form, while the engraved caseback elevates the piece beyond a rare Vacheron Constantin into something considerably more personal and historically resonant.
