Among the more extravagant watches produced by Rolex during the 1980s, the so-called Octopussy Day-Dates occupy a category entirely their own. Built around the familiar 36mm Day-Date, these watches transformed Rolexs most prestigious model into an exercise in gem-setting, produced in small numbers and in a variety of configurations that today rank among the most distinctive vintage Day-Dates.

The present reference 18049 is executed in white gold, with its 7.64 million serial number dating it to approximately 1983. The case is framed by a brilliant-cut diamond bezel and paired with a fully pave-set diamond dial. Rather than conventional hour markers, deep blue sapphire batons at six and nine oclock provide restrained points of color against the otherwise monochromatic surface. The familiar arched day aperture and magnified date remain, while the Rolex and Day-Date signatures are carried on small applied plaquesa practical and characteristic solution on Rolexs most densely gem-set dials.

It is the bracelet, however, that gives the watch its celebrated nickname. The extraordinary white-gold President bracelet is set with brilliant-cut diamonds on the outer links and baguette-cut diamonds running through the center. Each round diamond sits prominently above the surface of the bracelet in an individual setting, their resemblance to the suction cups of an octopus giving rise to the collector nickname Octopussy. The result is unusually architectural, with the alternating round and baguette stones emphasizing rather than obscuring the familiar geometry of the President bracelet.

These watches belong to an especially creative period for Rolex. During the late 1970s and 1980s, the manufacture experimented with elaborate combinations of diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds across Day-Date dials, bezels and bracelets. Long before the highly jeweled Rolex watches of the modern era, pieces such as the Octopussy demonstrated both the technical sophistication of Rolexs gem-setting and a willingness to push the Day-Date well beyond its traditionally conservative identity.

In white gold, the effect is particularly compelling. Despite the extraordinary quantity of diamonds, the absence of yellow gold gives the watch an unexpectedly cohesive appearance, with the sapphire indexes providing its only significant color. It is a wonderfully excessive expression of the vintage Day-Date and a reminder of a period when some of Rolexs most unusual creations existed far outside the conventional catalogue.
