Few watches have become as inseparable from a name as the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Paul Newman. Introduced in 1963, the Ref. 6239 established the blueprint for the Daytona, most notably moving the tachymeter scale from the dial to the bezel and giving Rolexs chronograph the sporting architecture that would define the collection for decades.
The present example, with a serial 1.87 million serial, dates to circa 1968.
Its defining feature is the black exotic dial that collectors would later christen the Paul Newman. Produced by Singer, these dials were originally an alternative to the conventional Daytona dial and were not particularly successful when new. Here, the black ground is contrasted by white, engine-turned subsidiary registers, an outer red seconds track and the arcing red DAYTONA signature above six oclock. The distinctive square-ended markers within the registers complete one of the most recognizable dial designs of the 20th century.
The association is more than a collector-created nickname. Newmans own Ref. 6239 was also produced in 1968 and famously became the watch through which this once-overlooked dial acquired its mythology.
At approximately 36.5mm, with pump pushers, steel tachymeter bezel and manually wound chronograph movement, the Ref. 6239 retains the compact proportions and purposeful simplicity of the earliest Daytonas. More than half a century later, the combination remains remarkably compelling: an important early Daytona paired with the dial that ultimately became the defining icon of vintage Rolex collecting.

When a watch is purchased, our watchmaker will perform a thorough inspection of the movement and perform a number of tests to ensure the watch is functioning in top condition before shipping. This process can take 7-10 business days.
Once your watch is ready, watches shipped within the United States are sent via insured FedEx Overnight and will arrive the next day. We will send over tracking information once the watch ships.
International shipping can take a number of days considering customs and travel. Straps made from exotic materials banned for import will be removed from the watch prior to shipping.
We know it can be difficult be completely certainly that a watch's condition, size or shape is what you are looking for.
We provide a 5 day inspection period from delivery so that you may receive the watch and decide if it is right for you.
This is not a trial period; our watches are well documented and any wear or damage will be deducted from the return amount.
The Keystone offers a one-year warranty covering all mechanical aspects of the watch. This includes abnormal time keeping relative to the watches age, battery replacements and general mechanical issues inside the watch. Many of the watches we sell are vintage and thus may gain or lose more time than modern specifications. We reserve the right to use our discretion and experience to determine acceptable time keeping for vintage watches.
