Few watches have come to define the modern luxury sports watch as completely as the Patek Philippe Nautilus. Introduced in 1976 and conceived by Gerald Genta, the reference 3700 combined a generously proportioned 42mm case, remarkably thin profile and integrated bracelet in a design that was both distinctly contemporary and unmistakably Patek Philippe. While the earliest examples were produced in stainless steel, the subsequent yellow-gold execution transformed Gentas industrial design into something altogether more opulent.

The present reference 3700/11J was manufactured in 1982 and retains the defining proportions of the original Jumbo. Its broad, brushed yellow-gold case is framed by a polished bevel, with the characteristic lateral hinges recalling the porthole from which the Nautilus took its inspiration. The integrated gold bracelet continues seamlessly from the case, its broad links giving the watch an impressive presence while remaining exceptionally supple on the wrist.

Particularly striking is the contrast between the warmth of the yellow gold and the dark dial. Its horizontally ribbed surface shifts subtly with the light, complemented by applied gold baton indexes and matching hands. The restrained two-line Patek Philippe signature, discreet date aperture at three and absence of a seconds hand preserve the unusually clean appearance for which the original 3700 is known.

Inside is the ultra-thin automatic calibre 28-255 C, derived from the celebrated Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 920 architecture. Its slim construction was fundamental to the proportions of the original Nautilus, allowing the substantial 42mm case to remain remarkably thin and elegant.

The watch presents with the honest character of a vintage gold sports watch, showing surface marks and wear throughout the case and bracelet while retaining the strong architecture and contrasting finishes central to the design. Of particular note are the clearly visible gold hallmarks to the reverse of the case.

Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming its manufacture in 1982, this yellow-gold 3700 represents one of the most compelling expressions of the original Nautilus: the purity of Gentas early design rendered entirely in gold, with the scale, thinness and unmistakable presence that earned the reference its enduring Jumbo moniker.
