Patek Philippe Yellow Gold First Series Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, Ref. 2499, Made in 1952

Few watches occupy a more important position in the history of Patek Philippe than the reference 2499. Introduced in 1951 as the successor to the reference 1518, it continued the extraordinary combination of a perpetual calendar and chronograph while introducing a larger, more sculptural case that would define Patek Philippes complicated wristwatches for the following three decades. Produced across four distinct series until 1985, the 2499 has become one of the manufactures most recognizable and consequential references.

The present watch was manufactured in 1952 and belongs to the coveted First Series, produced for only a relatively brief period during the 1950s. Fewer than 55 First Series examples are believed to have been made, exclusively in yellow and pink gold. Most immediately distinguished by their rectangular chronograph pushers, these early watches retain much of the visual character of the reference 1518 while introducing the broader proportions and more assertive case architecture of the 2499.

This example is housed in an 18k yellow-gold case made by Wenger, whose Geneva key number 1 appears within. Measuring approximately 37.5mm, the Wenger case is characterized by its rounded, bombe caseback and beautifully downturned, subtly fluted lugs. Wenger would go on to become closely associated with the reference, supplying the cases for the overwhelming majority of subsequent 2499 production. Particularly interesting are the French import hallmarks found on the caseback, providing a physical record of the watch having originally been sold into the French market.

The dial is quintessential First Series 2499. Applied yellow-gold Arabic numerals sit against a silvered surface, surrounded by an intricate arrangement of scales that gives these earliest examples their unmistakably vintage character. Twin apertures display the day and month beneath twelve oclock, while subsidiary registers indicate constant seconds and the 30-minute chronograph counter. At six, the date encircles the moonphase display, its deep blue sky providing the principal point of color. A railway-style date track and outer tachymeter scale complete a dial of remarkable complexity, yet one that remains exceptionally balanced and legible.

At its heart is the manually wound calibre 13-130, derived from the Valjoux 23 ebauche and extensively modified and finished by Patek Philippe. The same fundamental movement architecture had powered the reference 1518, connecting the First Series 2499 directly to the worlds first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch. It is this combination of continuity and evolution that makes the earliest 2499s particularly compelling: mechanically rooted in the 1518, but housed within a case whose proportions anticipated the next generation of Patek Philippe design.

The reference 2499 would ultimately remain in production for approximately 35 years, yet total output across all four series amounted to only a few hundred watches. Within that already rare population, the First Series represents the reference in its purest transitional form. With its square pushers, Wenger case, beautifully preserved period dial and French-market provenance, this 1950s example captures the moment when Patek Philippe transformed the language of the 1518 into what would become perhaps its definitive perpetual calendar chronograph.
