The Ref. 565 occupies a particularly interesting place in Patek Philippes mid-century catalogue. Introduced in 1938, it paired the restrained language of the Calatrava with unusually purposeful construction: a substantial 35mm case, screw-down caseback and protective inner cover, making it one of Patek Philippes earliest large, water-resistant wristwatches.

The present example was manufactured in 1951 and sold in 1952, as confirmed by its accompanying Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives. Dating from the final years of the references production, it is rendered in yellow gold and fitted with the less commonly encountered center-seconds configuration.

Its silvered dial is exceptionally clean in its execution, with applied faceted gold indexes, matching dauphine hands and a finely graduated outer seconds track. The long central seconds hand gives the otherwise formal design a slightly more instrumental character, while the warm, gently aged surface lends the watch the sort of presence that can only develop naturally over more than seven decades.

Perhaps most compelling is the case. The Ref. 565s long, dramatically faceted lugs are fundamental to its character, and this example retains attractive definition along with visible exterior hallmarks. At 35mm, its broad dial and elongated lugs give it considerably more wrist presence than its dimensions might suggest.

Elegant without being delicate, the Ref. 565 is an early expression of an idea that would become increasingly important to Patek Philippe: a refined watch designed to be genuinely worn. This late yellow-gold example, with center seconds and documented 1951 production, captures that balance particularly well.
