Among Patek Philippes mid-century time-only watches, the reference 2452 stands apart for the tension between an otherwise restrained Calatrava design and one of the manufactures more expressive case profiles of the period.

Introduced in 1949 and produced through the 1950s, the reference 2452 measures approximately 35mm in diameter, a notably generous size for a Patek Philippe dress watch of the era. The reference was produced in two principal series, with early examples housing the manually wound caliber 10-200 and later watches receiving the larger caliber 12-400. Production appears to have been comparatively limited, particularly when considered alongside the more familiar Calatrava references of the period.

The defining feature of the 2452 is undoubtedly its case. Rather than the simple straight lugs associated with many traditional Calatravas, the reference employs dramatically elongated, stepped lugs that turn downward toward the wrist. Their sculptural construction gives the watch considerably more presence than its dimensions might suggest, while the pronounced step running along each lug catches the light and emphasizes the architecture of the case.

The present example is rendered in yellow gold and pairs this distinctive case with a wonderfully restrained silvered dial. Applied yellow-gold baton and dagger indexes are joined by an Arabic 12, while a finely printed outer minute track and subsidiary seconds register at six oclock provide graphic contrast. The long gold hands and unusually open dial give the watch a particularly elegant appearance, with the 35mm case allowing the design considerably more breathing room than many of Patek Philippes smaller references from the same period.
