Patek Philippe Yellow Gold Calatrava Ref. 96 with Dore Dial

Few watches have exerted as lasting an influence on Patek Philippes design language as the Reference 96. Introduced in 1932, the model is widely regarded as the original Calatrava and was among the first Patek Philippe wristwatches to receive a formal reference number. Its restrained round case, flat bezel and elongated, downturned lugs established an architectural vocabulary that remains recognizable in the manufactures watches nearly a century later.

The present example was manufactured and sold in 1945, as confirmed by its accompanying Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives. Executed in yellow gold, it belongs to the second generation of the Reference 96, produced during the period in which the model was powered by the manually wound caliber 12120. At approximately 31mm in diameter, the proportions are modest by contemporary standards, yet the broad bezel and pronounced lugs give the watch a surprising amount of presence.

What distinguishes this example is its remarkable dore dial. Originally conceived with a silvered metallic finish, more than eighty years of natural aging have transformed its surface into a rich golden tone, subtly shifting between champagne, honey and pale gold depending on the light. The effect is especially appealing against the yellow-gold case, creating an almost monochromatic appearance.

The dial itself remains wonderfully restrained. Applied faceted gold indexes are paired with a double marker at twelve, while the subsidiary seconds register at six is defined by a sharply printed black chapter ring. A minute track of individual pearls runs around the perimeter, and the long-form PATEK PHILIPPE & Co / GENEVE signature provides a particularly evocative period detail. The combination of the aged dore surface and crisp black printing gives the watch much of its character.

Equally compelling is the preservation of the case. The long, tapering lugs retain their definition, while crisp exterior hallmarks remain clearly visibledetails increasingly valued on vintage Patek Philippe watches, where decades of polishing can easily diminish the original architecture. The case shows the honest evidence of age rather than having been stripped of it, complementing the patina of the dial particularly well.

The Reference 96 was produced for more than four decades and appeared with an extraordinary variety of dials, metals and configurations, making the subtle differences between individual examples central to its appeal for collectors. This 1945 example captures that appeal especially well: an archetypal Patek Philippe design elevated by a beautifully aged dore dial, strong case and clearly preserved hallmarks.

More than simply an early Calatrava, the Reference 96 represents the moment when Patek Philippe arrived at a formula for the modern dress watchone based not on ornament, but on proportion. In this example, eighty years of aging have only added another layer to that original simplicity.
