Introduced in 1985, the Patek Philippe Ref. 3940 marked a new chapter in the manufactures history. Powered by the ultra-thin automatic Caliber 240 Q, it distilled the perpetual calendar into an elegant, wearable form that quickly became the benchmark by which all modern perpetual calendars would be judged. Its harmonious dial layout, restrained proportions, and effortless legibility remain as compelling today as they were four decades ago, cementing the reference as one of Patek Philippes most celebrated complications.

This platinum example embodies everything collectors seek in a Ref. 3940. The case retains crisp proportions, highlighted by sharp, deeply impressed platinum hallmarks at the 9 oclock flank a subtle yet highly prized indicator of careful preservation of a second series example. Completing the watch is its original solid platinum caseback, offering the discreet elegance that many collectors favor while preserving the purity of the watchs profile.

The silvered dial is a masterclass in balance. Twin subsidiary registers display the day, 24-hour indication, month, and leap year, while the pointer date gracefully frames the moonphase aperture at six oclock. Here, the moonphase itself is rendered in solid gold, lending warmth and depth to an otherwise monochromatic composition. Applied faceted hour markers and dauphine hands complete a dial that is as refined as it is functional, demonstrating Patek Philippes unmatched ability to present immense mechanical complexity with remarkable clarity.

Accompanied by its Extract from the Archives confirming manufacture in 1989 and sale in 1990, this Ref. 3940 represents an early chapter in one of Patek Philippes most important references. Combining exceptional preservation, crisp exterior hallmarks, the desirable solid caseback, and the warmth of its gold moonphase display, it is an outstanding example of the perpetual calendar that defined a generation and remains one of the purest expressions of modern Patek Philippe watchmaking.
