Patek Philippe Rose Gold Perpetual Calendar Second Series Watch Ref. 3940

Few references capture Patek Philippe under Philippe Stern as completely as the 3940. Introduced in 1985 as the successor to the references 3448 and 3450, it represented a dramatic rethinking of the automatic perpetual calendar. Where its predecessors were angular and comparatively austere, the 3940 adopted a softer 36mm case and an exceptionally balanced three-register dial, establishing a design that would remain in production for more than two decades.

The present example was manufactured and sold in 1992, as confirmed by its accompanying Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives. The Extract further records the watch in 18k rose gold with an opaline silvered dial, rose-gold hour markers and English indications. Dating from the mature portion of second-series production, it displays many of the details that collectors prize in these earlier 3940s. The leap-year indication at three oclock is divided by the characteristic cross, while the serif typography and low-positioned SWISS signature retain a distinctly vintage character that would later be refined on the third series.

The dial remains one of the great achievements of modern Patek Philippe design. Day and 24-hour indication occupy the register at nine oclock, month and leap year sit opposite at three, while the date encircles the moonphase at six. Despite the amount of information presented, the composition remains remarkably calm. Applied rose-gold indexes and sharply faceted dauphine hands bring warmth to the opaline surface, while the blued subsidiary hands and dark moonphase provide subtle contrast.

Rose gold gives the 3940 an especially appealing character. Produced alongside yellow gold, white gold and platinum, it is considerably less frequently encountered than the traditional yellow-gold version. Here, the warm case and matching dial furniture soften the technical nature of the perpetual calendar, while the slender case and long, gently downturned lugs retain the restrained proportions for which the reference is celebrated.

At its heart is the self-winding calibre 240 Q, one of the movements most closely associated with Patek Philippes modern complicated watchmaking. Its use of an off-center 22k gold micro-rotor allowed the perpetual-calendar mechanism to remain exceptionally thin, giving the 3940 the elegant profile that distinguishes it from many complicated watches of the period. The movement automatically accounts for the differing lengths of the months and leap-year cycle while displaying the day, date, month, moonphase and 24-hour indication.

The case itself presents attractively, with the flowing lugs and stepped bezel retaining pleasing definition and only the expected evidence of careful wear. Particularly evocative is the solid caseback, which still carries traces of its original protective material and markings small details that speak to the watchs preservation rather than attempting to disguise its age.

The reference 3940 has increasingly come to define an important period in Patek Philippes history: traditional high complication watchmaking expressed in a form that was elegant enough to be worn every day. This rose-gold second-series example, produced and sold in 1992 and accompanied by its Extract from the Archives, captures that formula particularly well understated in scale, mechanically sophisticated, and unmistakably Patek Philippe.
