Among Patek Philippes early wristwatch chronographs, the reference 533 remains one of the most distinctive and elusive. Introduced in 1937, it shares much of its underlying architecture with the better-known reference 130, but replaces the latters concave bezel with a broad, flat bezel. Combined with its elongated lugs and rectangular chronograph pushers, the change gives the 33mm watch a surprisingly strong and architectural presence on the wrist. The reference remained in production until the 1950s, with scholarship suggesting only a few hundred examples were made in total.

The present watch was manufactured in 1941 and sold on December 24th of the same year, as confirmed by its accompanying Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives. Executed in pink gold, it is distinguished further by its exceptionally attractive pink dial a particularly sought-after combination among vintage Patek Philippe chronographs.

The dial is remarkably rich in detail. Its satin-finished pink surface is complemented by applied pink-gold hour markers, including prominent Arabic numerals at twelve and six. Two recessed subsidiary registers provide constant seconds and a 30-minute chronograph counter, while the perimeter is occupied by a finely printed tachymeter scale. The long-form Patek Philippe & Co / Geneve signature and combination of gold and blued hands complete a dial that feels unmistakably of the early 1940s. Importantly, the Extract specifically records the satin-finished dial, applied rose-gold hour markers and tachymetric scale.

Inside is Patek Philippes manually wound 13-ligne chronograph calibre, the celebrated architecture that powered several of the manufactures most important chronographs of the period. The movement is housed within the reference 533s characteristic case, whose flat bezel provides a subtle but important distinction from the reference 130 and gives the watch a noticeably more assertive profile.

Pink-on-pink Patek Philippe chronographs represent a particularly charismatic corner of the manufactures vintage production. Period examples of the reference 533 with pink dials are known, but remain decidedly uncommon, with comparable archive-confirmed watches appearing only sporadically at auction.

Combining the purity of an early Patek Philippe two-register chronograph with an unusually warm and harmonious palette, this 1941 reference 533 has considerable presence despite its restrained proportions. The pink-gold case, rare pink dial and archive-confirmed configuration make it an especially compelling example of one of Patek Philippes lesser-seen vintage chronograph references.
