Introduced in 1962, the Patek Philippe Ref. 3448 was the worlds first self-winding perpetual calendar wristwatch and remains one of the defining complicated watches of the postwar era. Its appeal lies as much in its architecture as its technical significance: a broad 37.5mm case, sharply faceted lugs and an unusually clean dial give the 3448 a distinctly modern presence more than sixty years after its introduction.

This yellow-gold example dates to 1970 and is distinguished by its indelibly printed dial. During this period, Patek Philippe experimented with a printing technique intended to produce exceptionally durable dial signatures and scales. The resulting typography has a subtly different character from conventionally printed examples and represents one of the more esoteric variations found within the reference.

The dial itself is wonderfully restrained. Twin apertures display the day and month beneath 12 oclock, while the moonphase and date occupy a single subsidiary register at six. Applied gold baton indexes and dauphine hands complete a layout that manages to convey considerable information without sacrificing the clarity for which the 3448 is celebrated.

The case presents particularly well, retaining strong definition to its distinctive angular lugs and visible hallmarks. Dating from the middle years of Ref. 3448 production and featuring the uncommon indelible dial printing, this example captures the reference at its most archetypal: technically important, beautifully proportioned and unmistakably Patek Philippe.
