Daniel Roth occupies a singular position in the development of modern independent watchmaking. Having played a defining role in the revival of Breguet during the 1970s and 80s, Roth established his eponymous manufacture in 1988, becoming one of the earliest watchmakers of the modern era to build a brand around his own name. The distinctive double-ellipse case he developed soon became his signature, housing everything from simple time-only watches to tourbillons and perpetual calendars.
The present Le Sentier Sport Automatic represents a less commonly encountered side of Roths early production. Dating to the 1990s, it retains the unmistakable architecture of his classical watches while adopting a decidedly more substantial execution. The 36mm double-ellipse case is fashioned in yellow gold and flows directly into an integrated gold bracelet, whose broad links are punctuated by four raised, geometric elements. The unusual bracelet gives the watch considerable presence while remaining unmistakably of its period.
Its two-tone dial is characteristically elaborate. A silvered Roman numeral chapter ring surrounds a vertically textured grey center, with the same decoration continuing around the perimeter. Roths distinctive arrow-shaped hands are fitted with luminous inserts, while a central seconds hand and date aperture at six complete the display. Despite the more sporting character of the watch, the dial retains the highly architectural quality that defines Roths work.
Through the sapphire caseback, the automatic movement can be seen beneath a signed rotor, with the surrounding caseback prominently engraved DANIEL ROTH and LE SENTIER a reference to the watchmaking village in Switzerlands Vallee de Joux where Roth established his manufacture.
Perhaps most compelling is the contrast between the watch and the pieces most closely associated with Daniel Roth today. While collectors often gravitate toward his tourbillons and complicated dress watches, the Le Sentier Sport demonstrates how readily his distinctive design language could be adapted to something bolder and more informal. Executed entirely in yellow gold and retaining its remarkable integrated bracelet, this example is an uncommon expression of early Daniel Roth and a particularly charismatic artifact from the formative years of modern independent watchmaking.
