The Bulgari Serpente occupies a singular position within the landscape of 20th-century watch designan object that blurs the boundary between horology and jewelry with uncommon confidence. First conceived in the post-war period and continuously reinterpreted in the decades that followed, the Serpente became a canvas through which Bulgari explored form, sensuality, and the expressive potential of precious materials. By the 1970s, under the creative influence of Gerald Genta, the Serpente evolved into something altogether more graphic and architectural, embracing bolder contrasts and more assertive geometries.

The present example stands apart even within this already inventive lineage. Its most striking feature is the placement of the head at the center of the compositionan unconventional interpretation that transforms the watch from a terminal point into the focal heart of the coiled form. Rather than concluding the bracelet, the dial is embedded within it, creating a continuous, rhythmic flow of gold and black links that wrap the wrist with sculptural intent.

Executed in a two-tone construction, the bracelet alternates between polished yellow gold and deep black elements, producing a visual cadence that feels both modern and distinctly of its era. This interplay culminates in a black dial, understated yet purposeful, allowing the materiality of the bracelet itself to take precedence. The effect is one of cohesioneach component reinforcing the overall identity of the piece as a unified object rather than a watch attached to a bracelet.

Adding a further layer of intrigue, this example is fitted with an automatic movementan uncommon feature within the Serpente family, where manually wound calibres are more frequently encountered. The inclusion of an automatic mechanism speaks to a quiet technical ambition beneath the overtly decorative exterior, aligning the piece not only with jewelry design but with the evolving expectations of contemporary watchmaking in the 1970s.

Preserved in strong overall condition and accompanied by its original Bulgari presentation box, the watch retains the integrity of its surfaces and the crisp contrast of its alternating links. It wears with a presence that is unmistakableat once fluid and structured, ornamental yet deliberate.

As a study in proportion, material, and innovation, this Bulgari Serpente offers a compelling reflection of its time. It is a piece that resists categorization, equally at home in the canon of important design as it is within the world of horologyan enduring testament to Bulgaris ability to redefine what a wristwatch can be.
