The Royal Oak has become one of the defining watch designs of the last half-century, but examples like this remind us that Audemars Piguet has long approached gem-setting with the same creativity as watchmaking.

This Royal Oak Ref. 56603BC, originally sold in 1996, transforms the familiar 33mm silhouette into a remarkable exercise in jewelry craftsmanship. The white gold case, bracelet, and dial retain their original factory pave diamond setting, while vivid baguette-cut emeralds punctuate the design at every turn framing the bezel, serving as hour markers, and flowing through the center links of the bracelet. Rather than overwhelming Gerald Gentas iconic architecture, the gemstones accentuate it, preserving the Royal Oaks unmistakable geometry.

What makes this example especially compelling is its originality. The gem-setting remains exactly as it left Audemars Piguet, preserving the proportions, symmetry, and exceptional finishing that distinguish factory-set pieces from later commissions. The contrast between brilliant pave diamonds and richly saturated emeralds creates one of the most striking and elegant gemstone configurations ever offered on a Royal Oak.

A rare expression of 1990s Audemars Piguetequal parts haute horlogerie and haute joaillerie, and among the most captivating gem-set Royal Oaks we have encountered.
