Audemars Piguet Steel Transitional Jumbo Royal Oak Ref. 5402 Rare No Serial Watch (New Arrival)

Introduced in 1972, the reference 5402 was the original Royal Oak: Gerald Gentas radical 39mm stainless-steel sports watch that established an entirely new category of luxury watchmaking. Its octagonal bezel, exposed screws and fully integrated bracelet remain essentially inseparable from the Royal Oak identity more than half a century later.

The present watch belongs to one of the most unusual chapters in the early history of the 5402. At the end of 1974, as Audemars Piguet transitioned away from the original A-series, a small group of watches was produced without the familiar alphanumeric Royal Oak number engraved on the caseback. Audemars Piguets archival research now records just 129 examples of these no number watches, with the overwhelming majority sold during 1975. They occupy a fascinating transitional position, overlapping the final A-series watches and the introduction of the B-series.

This example is accompanied by documentation from the Audemars Piguet archives recording its sale in 1975. Its caseback displays only the large Royal Oak signature, conspicuously absent the A- or B-prefixed number normally associated with the early 5402. Otherwise, it retains the defining architecture of the earliest Royal Oaks, including the 39mm monobloc-style steel case, integrated bracelet and beautifully thin profile made possible by the automatic calibre 2121.

The dial is equally characteristic of the period, with its dark Petite Tapisserie surface, elongated luminous indexes and applied AP monogram positioned at six oclock. The restrained dial is particularly effective against the sharply articulated case and bracelet, whose alternating brushed surfaces and polished bevels remain central to Gentas original design.

The watch was serviced by Audemars Piguet in 2021 and today presents in particularly attractive condition, with strong case geometry, clearly defined bevels and an integrated bracelet that retains the distinctive character of the early 5402.

More than simply an early Royal Oak, this No Serial 5402 represents a brief and well-documented transitional moment in the models history. With only 129 examples recorded by Audemars Piguet, and an archive-documented 1975 sale date, it is an especially compelling variation of the original Royal Oak Jumbo.
