As the world of wristwatches became increasingly more digitized in the late 1960's, Rolex was faced with a decision to appeal to the growing market interested in this new technology. It's response in 1970 was the Beta 21 Quartz. A completely new case form with a more angular design than the mechanical Datejust model, the Beta 21 with the highly unusual electronic movement immediately gained popularity amongst the general public. And in 1977 Rolex introduced the more refined Oysterquartz which feature a slightly slimmer design than its predecessor and enhanced accuracy and reliability. Finally in 2000, the Oysterquartz was discontinued and has since  become a highly collectible model around the globe.
