First introduced by Louis Cartier in 1912, its softly curved, tortoise-inspired form would later provide the foundation for one of the maisons earliest chronographs in 1928. Nearly a century later, Cartier returned to this design for the Prive collection, creating a remarkably faithful interpretation of the historic Tortue Monopoussoir.

The present platinum example retains much of the character of its 1928 predecessor. Its silvered opaline dial is framed by applied Roman numerals and a precise chemin-de-fer minutes track, while two recessed registers interrupt the otherwise classical arrangement. Blued steel pomme hands and the distinctive open-circle counterweight of the central chronograph hand provide a restrained flash of color. The chronograph itself is controlled entirely through a single pusher integrated into the crown, preserving the elegant, uninterrupted profile of the Tortue case.

The 35mm platinum case is generously proportioned while remaining just 10.2mm thick. Through the shaped sapphire caseback sits the manually wound calibre 1928 MC, developed specifically for this watch. At only 4.3mm thick, it is Cartiers thinnest chronograph movement to date, employing a column-wheel architecture and offering approximately 44 hours of power reserve. Its construction is deliberately exposed beneath the sapphire back, allowing the chronograph works to become an integral part of the watchs design.

Limited to just 200 numbered examples in platinum, the Tortue Monopoussoir occupies an unusual position within modern Cartier: contemporary in execution, yet closely connected to one of the maisons most important early complicated wristwatches. It is a particularly compelling expression of the modern Prive collection, bringing together Cartiers strength in shaped cases with a genuinely sophisticated chronograph movement.

https://thekeystone.com/products/cartier-platinum-prive-tortue-monopoussoir-chronograph-limited-200-pieces
